Application Guidelines for Tufts University students – Kanazawa University Student Exchange Program 2026

Program Capacity
The program capacity is 8 students.
In addition, up to 2 self-financed students may be accepted, for a maximum total of 10 participants.
Eligibility
Applicants must satisfy all of the following requirements:
- 1. Be currently enrolled in the undergraduate or graduate program at Tufts University.
- 2. Be in good academic standing.
- 3. Have a clear purpose for study abroad, with full intent to devote themselves to academic and cultural activities.
- 4. Return to their home institutions and continue their education after completing the program.
- 5. Be able to obtain appropriate visa status for Japan.
- 6. Be in good health and capable of participating in the program.
Housing
Kanazawa University will arrange accommodation (shared rooms) in Kanazawa and Shiramine.
Participation Fee
JPY 20,000-70,000 (approx. 128-449 USD)
* Up to 3 students may receive a scholarship of JPY 80,000 (approx. 513 USD). For details, please refer to section 3. Japan Student Service Organization (JASSO) Scholarship.
* This program is supported by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT). The tentative funding amount is JPY 50,000 per participant (for up to 8 students). This amount will be finalized at the end of March 2026. Depending on the final funding amount, the participation fee may be subject to change.
Participants may pay the fee online before arrival in Japan, in April-May 2026.

Step 1: Prepare all necessary documents

Notification of Acceptance
Kanazawa University will notify students and their home institutions of acceptance by mid-March 2026.
- 【3. Japan Student Service Organization (JASSO) Scholarship】
The JASSO Scholarship is awarded to privately financed international students with excellent academic records who are facing financial difficulties.

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:
- 1. Have the nationality of a country or region that has diplomatic relations with Japan. Taiwanese and Palestinian nationals are eligible. Students with Japanese citizenship are NOT eligible.
- 2. Not have the financial means to study in Japan.
- 3. Be regular students at Tufts University at the time the program begins. Those who will graduate from or complete their studies at their home university during their studies at Kanazawa University, or those who will enter graduate school from the undergraduate program at their home university, are not eligible.
- 4. Demonstrate excellent academic and personal records at their home university.
- 5. Not receive more than JPY 80,000 per month in total from other scholarships for study in Japan.

How to Appy for the Scholarship
To apply for the JASSO scholarship, please submit an academic transcript from the previous academic year along with the application documents for the program by the application deadline.

Visa
Students must check the required documents to apply for the Short-Term Stay Visa to enter Japan.
