Researcher Training Program, Medical Research Course
I feel more motivated to continue pursuing my research.
現地の人との交流について印象に残ったことは?
How was your experience interacting with local people?
I visited a research lab specializing in transplant immunology and was impressed by the diverse group of students from around the world, each bringing unique backgrounds and perspectives. During the second half of my trip, I attended a conference where I had the opportunity to learn about world-class research and present the results of my own work from Japan. At the poster sessions, I was able to engage in meaningful discussions about experimental methods and findings related to my research.
As for communication, I encountered various English accents, but since I had prepared in advance, I didn’t face any major difficulties. Although the language differed, there were moments when we could bond over shared topics, which gave me a sense of fulfillment that I hadn’t experienced in Japan.

Please write about what left a strong impression on you during the program period.
The laboratory I visited had published numerous papers based on solid seed research. However, the facilities were housed in relatively old buildings, and I didn’t feel they were fully equipped with the latest high-tech equipment. On the other hand, the barriers to collaborative research seemed low, and I observed that many collaborations were taking place, with each lab focusing on its own areas of expertise and analytical methods. It was clear that these collaborations played a key role in producing excellent research and publications.
I had previously imagined that research funding in the U.S. would be abundant, and I saw firsthand how these collaborations and the sharing of roles contributed to efficient, high-quality research. However, the fundamental concepts and techniques they used were the same as those I am learning in Japan, which reaffirmed the importance of building a solid foundation before progressing to the next level.

What was a useful experience for your future career among your experiences during the program?
I hope to study abroad for several years after obtaining my Ph.D., so it has been very beneficial to experience the atmosphere of the laboratory while I am still a graduate student. By speaking with senior students who are currently studying abroad, I was able to set clear short-term goals for my upcoming overseas study. As a result, I feel more motivated to continue pursuing my research.
次年度以降、同じプログラムに参加する学生に伝えたいこと
Comments for students who will participate in the same program next year.
Even if you are not fully confident in your expertise or language skills, I believe that participating in this kind of overseas exchange offers a valuable opportunity to reflect on your future career. I hope you won’t miss the chance to take on this challenge.
The financial aspect was a major concern for me, especially given the high cost of living and the weak yen during my trip. Without support from the university, I don’t think I would have been able to have this experience. I encourage you to take full advantage of Kanazawa University’s program and make the most of the opportunities it provides.
渡航前・渡航後のCOILを含め、プログラム全体を通しての感想
Feedback on the program, including COILs before and after trips to the US/Japan.
Before my trip, I gathered sufficient information about the on-site activities by meeting virtually via Zoom, which helped me prepare well. I would like to continue utilizing interactive communication through COIL in the future.
Moreover, not only was I able to visit research labs, but I also had the opportunity to participate in conferences, which made the experience even more rewarding. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Kanazawa University and the International Relations Department for their support.
